Injection Sclerotherapy |
Injection Sclerotherapy is used for the treating Thread Veins, also known as Spider Veins or Flare Veins. Under magnification a fine needle is inserted into the vein and, once the Specialist is happy it is correctly positioned, a tiny amount of liquid chemical solution is injected. The chemical, known as a Sclerosant, is a detergent that causes local irritation to the lining of the vein causing it to block permanently. The veins are slowly absorbed by the body over several weeks.
After Injection Sclerotherapy there can be some bruising. This is usually mild, but can last a few months if the area treated is large. Occasionally, the treated areas can look worse before they look better as a result of the bruising The bruising subsides to become a faint brown tan line along the vein. This fades with time so that even the worst of bruises become almost invisible. In the vast majority of cases a good result is achieved over time. Other problems that can result from Injection sclerotherapy are development of venous blush in the treated area, skin ulceration, allergic reaction, and very rarely, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). High compression stockings are worn for up to three days to help reduce the amount of bruising, it doesn’t hurt to keep the stockings on for longer. This is particularly the case if larger areas and larger veins are treated in this way. It is also possible for some larger veins to become inflamed and the vessel can feel hard, warm and a little sore. These symptoms resolve quickly and are improved by using the stockings for longer and by using anti-inflammatory medication or creams if there are no side effects. Importantly, the patient must keep walking and keep well hydrated. Taking regular exercise is a very good way of improving both the result and the overall recovery. Your Specialist will be able to guide how best to care for yourself after the treatment. Injection Sclerotherapy often needs to be repeated to effectively treat the area, particularly if it is large. There are limits to how much of the Sclerosant chemical solution can be injected at any particular time. A period of recovery, two to six weeks, should be had between treatment episodes. New veins can appear over time. These can easily be treated in the same way as before. For more, no obligation, information about Injection Sclerotherapy send a 'Contact' form. |
